4 June - Trail running, The Gypaete, Le Grand Bornand - Chinaillon
There are five courses for this event, with three of the starting points in Chinaillon. These courses range from 13km to 71km, with entry ranging from €17 to €70. There's even a circuit for pairs to compete (La Circaète binôme). Of course it’s free to watch! For more information and to register, go to the website.
5 June - Cycling festival Thônes
Explore the town and the surrounding area by bike when you join this free family-friendly cycle. Children from the age of 10 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Register on the day at the tourist office at Place Avet. Call +33 (0)4 50 02 00 26.
11 June - Faites de la Musique, Thônes
Music takes over the town centre, with local musicians and groups performing on the streets. The event is a play on words for the national Fête de la Musique later in the month, which is so popular in Annecy that Thônes decided to hold their event earlier. 11, 12 June - Cyclomontagnarde - Cycle from Annecy to Le Grand Bornand
A two-day cycle from Lake Annecy via Le Grand Bornand through mountains and lush green valleys. For more information and to register go to the website.
13-18 June - Annecy International Animation and Film Festival, Annecy
Get your fill of features and short films, as well as tributes, retrospectives and special programmes, sneak previews and open-air screenings. Selma Hayek will be opening the festival. For more information, to book tickets and to find out which films are competing, go to the website.
14-19 June - Que vive le Patrimoine, Manigod
It’s heritage week in this beautiful village and they are celebrating with concerts, films, guided hikes and storytelling. The activities focus on six local chapels, which are all worth a visit!
16 June - Passage de la Coupe des Alpes. Le Grand Bornand
This rally for sports cars dating from 1950 to 1986 passes through Le Grand Bornand on its way from Evian to Cannes on its 70th anniversary.
17-19 June - Roc des Alpes, La Clusaz
Mountain bike enthusiasts will descend on La Clusaz for 18 competitions across three days of action, ranging from downhill freeride, XC, trail-riding, enduro, marathon and the famous Eliminator obstacle race. There will also be a programme of events for non-bikers in the resort. For more information and to register, visit the website.

19 June - Tour de Savoie-Mont Blanc, Le Grand Bornand
From 1.40pm to 2.20pm, this cycle race will be passing through Le Grand Bornand.
21 June - Fête de la Musique Annecy
Once a year across France, a day is given over to musical celebrations of all kinds. In Annecy, there will be a programme of free open-air concerts to suit all ages and musical tastes. Check the website closer to the time for details of artists and performance times and venues.
26 June - 18th Cyclosportive, Le Grand Bornand
This cycle race organised by the Velo Club is a stage of the Challenge Haute Savoie. Starting from and finishing at the Espace Grand Bo from 7.55am, registration is €37, with an extra €12 for a meal ticket.
26 June - Savoie Cup, La Clusaz
Organised by the Porsche Club Pays de Savoie, this weekend rally will see almost 200 Porsches pass through the village — a great spectacle, whether or not you are a motoring enthusiast!
30 June-2 July - Musiques En Stock, Cluses
Big names feature at this free music festival in the town of Cluses, less than an hour from La Clusaz. The full line-up includes Primal Scream, Temples, Ty Segall, Birdpen and Matt Corby. There’s also an international food area, a bar, a kids’ zone, and some a festival market.
1-10 July - Back to Grand Bo, Le Grand Bornand
A unique paragliding competition of amateurs and experts where the goal is to cover the longest round trip. Pilots take off from the summit of Mont Lachat and the only rule is they have to land in Le Grand Bornand. There’s €8,000 in prize money! Registration is €45 (or €60 after June 15), which entitles you to five lifts to Mont Lachat, valid until the end of 2016. Of course, it costs nothing to watch!
2-3 July, Jeep Festival, Manigod
See a range of vehicles including Jeeps and Dodges, demonstrations and food. Organised by L’amicale Jeep la Croix-Fry.
10 July - Etape du Tour passes through Le Grand Bornand and La Clusaz
A chance for amateur cyclists to experience a stage of the Tour de France under the same conditions as the real competitors later in the month. Not to be confused with the actual 20th stage of the Tour de France, from Megève to Morzine, on 23rd July, which covers 146 km and a climb of 11.7km with a gradient of 5.8%!
13 July - National Day celebrations, Chinaillon
An evening of activities, concerts and fireworks marks the national day. For a programme of events, which start at 6.30pm in Chinaillon village centre, visit the tourist office.
13 July - Firemen’s Ball, La Clusaz
It wouldn’t be a national holiday without the Firemen’s Ball! This traditional event takes place every year on the eve of the bank holiday and is open to residents and tourists. The fun starts at 8pm.
14 July - Mountain Festival, Le Grand Bornand
Celebrate Bastille Day with a Savoyard meal in the village square at Le Grand Bornand while the mountain peaks are lit up for the occasion. Fireworks, music and dancing add to the magical atmosphere. The event is organised by the local mountain rescue team.
14 July - Fête Nationale, Manigod
In Manigod, the fun starts at 5pm with various activities organised by the fire brigade. In the evening, local food producers get together to put on a huge feast in the village square, followed by a torchlit parade, fireworks and dancing. 18-19 July - Musilac, Aix-les-Bains
This three-day music festival less than an hour from Annecy is a favourite with the OVO team. Elton John headlines for 2016 . Check out the website for the full line-up and to book your tickets. A three-day pass is €129 or €144 with camping. Day passes are €59.
18-22 July - Aravis et Cies
During this five-day, free mountain festival, the resorts and villages of the Aravis are transformed into a huge outdoor playground, with activities for all ages based around four themes: cycles (La Clusaz) ropes (Le Grand Bornand), nature (Manigod) and air (St Jean de Sixt). As night falls, the entertainment continues along the same themes, and it’s still all free!
23 July - Tour de France, 20th stage, Le Grand Bornand, La Clusaz
The 20th stage of the Tour de France (Mégève-Morzine) passes through Le Grand Bornand and La Clusaz and heads for the Col de la Colombiere. Don’t miss this spectacle — there’s a great atmosphere in the villages and all along the route!
24 July - Fête Champetre de Lormay, Le Grand Bornand
Old traditions, trades and handcrafts are revisited at this country fair organised by l’Animation Agricole Bornandine. Toss hay bales, find out how Reblochon is made, enjoy a delicious Savoyarde meal and dance the night away. For more information, call +33 (0)4 50 02 78 00 or visit the website.
26 July - Party time at the Lac de la Cour - Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon
Take the Le Chatelet chairlift to the lake where you can e
njoy a picnic and music, followed by a torchlight parade! Book your ticket at the tourist office by noon on the day. The event starts at 5.30pm.
31 July - Fête des Enfants Rois, Manigod
The village festival where kids are kings - free activities, bouncy castles, carnival games and a show, culminating in a barbecue.
3 August - Les Choeurs de France
A choir of more than 150 members from seven choirs all over France comes to Espace Grand Bo in Le Grand Bornand. See the website for more information.
6 August - Fête du Lac, Annecy
The bay at Albigny becomes the setting for Europe’s biggest firework display — more than an hour of pyrotechnics set to fountains, music and light. The event started in 1860, to greet the arrival of Napoleon III, and today around 200,000 people enjoy the fun every year.
6-7 August - Fête au village, La Clusaz
A weekend of fun and games for children, with shows and activities. As the day turns to night, the village is transformed, and the fun moves to the restaurants and bars.
7 August - Fete de L’Alpage, Le Grand Bornand
A day-long celebration of farming traditions including an ox-drawn wagon parade, a milking competition, a country-style meal and fireworks. Lunch is €13.50 for adults, a dinner of tomme blanche (similar to Mozzarella) is €9.
9 August - Party time at the Lac de la Cour - Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon

10-11 August - Pottery market, Chinaillon
Twenty potters from across the Rhone-Alpes region come together for this market in Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon
14 August - Fête sous l’Aiguille, Manigod
This traditional Savoyard party starts with an outdoor mass and a choir recital. After that there are stalls, competitions and craft demonstrations. The day is rounded off with a meal, dancing and fireworks.
14 August - Reblochon festival, La Clusaz
Every year, the village of La Clusaz celebrates Reblochon cheese: some 6,000 visitors descend on the Bossonnet area for bread, cheese and other local delicacies. Folk dancing, a parade of carnival floats and “tableaux vivants” complete the day.
15 August - Grimpée Cycliste, Le Grand Bornand
Keen cyclists over the age of 18 can tackle this timed ascent of the Col de la Colombiere. Registration is €12 with the Office Municipal des Sports et des Loisirs, on +33 (0)4 50 02 79 00.
15 August - The Feast of August 15, Le Grand Bornand
Enjoy a giant tartiflette in the centre of the village, accompanied by the local brass band. Cooking starts at 4pm with dinner at 7pm. Later there’s a raffle and an outdoor dance. The meal costs €13 for adults and €8 for children under 10. Book at the tourist office. Call +33 (0)4 50 02 78 00.
18 August - Craft market La Clusaz
Artisans from across the area meet at the Place de L’Eglise to sell handmade goods, some of which are made on the spot.
19-21 August - Bélier des Aravis
This running event has a choice of four routes as well as children’s courses. You can walk or race, it’s up to you. With 1,000 metres of ascent, following trails through mountain pastures and forests, it’s tough, but absolutely delightful. About 2,000 people take part every year, and it’s a great way to discover the surrounding countryside!
21-26 August - Au bonheur des Mômes, Le Grand Bornand
This week-long children’s festival is the highlight of the summer for youngsters. With over 90 theatre companies, 380 shows, as well as expos, workshops and other entertainment, it's the biggest youth festival in Europe. Many of the events are free. 3 September - Route des Alpes, Le Grand Bornand
The sixth edition of this race from Nice to Geneva passes through Le Grand Bornand. It’s thrilling to watch the cyclists pass through on this multi-day race, but if you want more information about entering, go to the website.
18 September - Foire de la Saint-Maurice, Le Grand Bornand
This agricultural fair is a great day out for the family, with livestock and Reblochon competitions, animal parades, a communal lunch and a dinner designed to show off local produce and a dance in the evening.
24 September, La Resistance, Annecy
Sixty years after the French Resistance put up a last stand against German troops on the Plateau de Glieres, this one-day cycle challenge pays tribute to their efforts and sacrifice. A gruelling 130km circular route leaves Talloires on the lakeside and follows tarmac and gravel roads to traverse some of the highest passes in Haute Savoie. The route passes the Resistance memorial as well as the Necropole cemetery where many of the Resistance fighters are buried. For more details or to register, visit to the website.
